Introducing: Alternative Music – Charles Dixon

Here at Vibe 107.6, we are dedicated to new, upcoming musicians and their art. As part of a new blogging series, I will be combing through alternative music out there – from Neo-Soul to Alternative Hip Hop, in Watford, and across the country. I’ll be bringing you different sounds to what we usually broadcast but not too different that you just can’t stand it! To kickstart these blogs, where better to start than our own backyard? Meet Charles Dixon. The Alternative Hip Hop artist from Kings Langley released a debut self-produced, independent mixtape in late August. The 24 year old’s style of music has a distinct raspy and poetic quality that pulls you in. My stand-out song on his debut mixtape "Cloud Walking Vol 1" would have to be “We Could Have It All”. The opening line “Postmodern prehistoric, living in the middle of it” is dark and made daunting by Dixon’s deep, low tones. Yet the intro of the catchy synthesizer, guitar, and piano all work together to create a light, poetic feeling. But don't get too used to the feel good vibe! The unexpected breakdown into an experimental, futuristic sounding Hip Hop mix takes us back to the early dark feeling and distorts comfort. This track features rapper Styleeb, great vocals from Marc Emmanuel & Ryan Robinson, and beautiful harmonies from Florentina Georgiou.
