Alternative Music – Tobago Tracks

Written By Isaac Ouro-Gnao

Tobago Tracks has been growing in size online since its creation in 2013, working with artists and producers across the world – France, USA, Turkey & China to name a few.

The label and party night collective also continues to build its presence locally, with recent host events such as ‘Interim’ at the Attico Art Centre on Watford’s high street – with the familiar Charles Dixon making an appearance.

With a breadth of wonderfully musical and first-class features to choose from, making a choice proved difficult. Pitcheno, Sylvere, Yayoyanoh, OrganTapes, and 4thaedstrong all have a unique style which makes Tobago Tracks a very diverse label.

A track which personally grabbed my attention however, is Window. Produced by Tim Zha under the Organ Tapes banner, this track is a metal-creaking euphoric adventure.

Hailing from London, Zha’s uniqueness is a result of genre blends. Taking inspirations from hip hop, afrobeats, and bop over years spent in China and the UK, Zha’s arrived at a point of musical mastery.

The futuristic sounding ticks, vocals, and hip hop undertones in Window was released with an eerie and haunting text by Tom Love.

"And, behold, a hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. A choral shroud and the breath of flute. Creaking metal and the withering voice.

"A katana blade and the path of blood. Wanna love you even though I know I can’t now. Shanghai, China. London, England. Simultaneity still. 1993, 2015, ////. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven.

"This deterioration and rebirth; our entropy and ascension. A bolt of light fading into the future. A relic of the present. I know the happiness what I want is in that higher sky. The forgotten self. Stagger and shine. Girl I should be flying.

"A longing transposed, the shadow of skin. Our essential loop. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love. I know you hear what I’m saying. Faith in words."

Press play, and dive into this very unique track, guaranteed to make you bop your head yet lose yourself in the layers of ambient sounds and narrative.
