We'll get it out of the way first. Catherine Sera is a friend of mine, and the one who introduced me to this weird and wonderful world of alternative music. Neo Soul is a style of music that emerged from the blending of soul and contemporary R&B. Catherine, from London, is a talent which embodies this feeling of the new. With inspirations such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Miguel to name a few, Catherine has an abundance of creativity at her disposal. Armed with powerful vocals, the 22 year old opts for the subtleties in her music - from quiet whispery harmonies to low melodic tones. The songstress has been writing from a young age, focusing on human interactions and relationships, and bringing words to life in her sound - with vocals and poetry. "You", "Just Ain't Right", and "Secrecy" especially hold true to this. As a one-woman Floetry, her experimental sounds have seen her perform all around London, with an EP - Strange Heaven - still in the works. From that EP is this week's feature. The Rarity is truly an experimental piece with layers of intricate sounds and vocals.
