Celebrating the 100th birthday of national hero, icon and treasure Captain Tom Moore, the West Herts NHS Hospitals charity, Raise, are auctioning original, painted tributes of Capt. Tom, donated by local artists.
The bidding closing at midnight today, all money raised from the sold paintings will go to the West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
Honouring the World War Two veteran who raised over £31 million for the National Health Service by walking laps of his garden, Member of Parliament for Watford, Dean Russell is among those who donated artwork.
The Member of Parliament thanked Captain Tom on behalf of the community. He said:
“I’m sure everyone in the constituency will join me in saying “Thank You” for everything you have done to galvanise the nation behind the NHS in recent weeks.”
During the war, the Yorkshireman served in India and Burma, later becoming an instructor at the Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington, Dorset.
His song at the top of the charts and now an honorary colonel and honorary member of the England cricket team, a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight flypast along with birthday wishes from the Queen and Prime Minister marked the celebratory occasion.
Both paintings incorporate the NHS rainbow theme. Local artist Mike Dawson, who donated a pop art tribute, said:
“I was inspired to paint Captain Tom because he has captured the hearts of the nation and become Britain’s greatest-ever fundraiser.
“My ‘pop art’ representation of him depicts him wearing his blazer and medals, backed by the NHS rainbow. lt was created using acrylic paints and comes varnished and ready-to-hang, on a boxed canvas.”
