This month's nation-wide heatwave has led to warnings of storms, flooding and air pollution in the London and Watford area.
Most gardens in Hertfordshire have not seen rain this month, but there is finally some rain forecast for the weekend. While temperatures will still reach 30 degrees celsius, many are looking forward to seeing some rainfall.
However, with such dry soil, some surface water flooding is possible across the East of England and around London. Although the warnings are not severe, gov.uk have issued a 5-day flood warning for England and Wales, starting from today. If land, roads or properties flood there is likely to be some travel disruption in urban areas.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Greater London due to the likelihood of thunderstorms. Weekend storms could cause power cuts to homes and businesses, and the expected weather will affect driving conditions.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, has also issued a 'high' air pollution alert for today. London's current high temperatures, when combined with the toxic air from traffic in the capital, and the lack of cloud cover coming in from Europe, has meant an air pollution alert for the ninth time since Khan became Mayor.
“This is the second time in six months that we have had to use the ‘high’ alert system and shows just why air pollution is a public health crisis,” warned Sadiq Khan.
The average air pollution in Watford is at a medium/low, but busy roads will be affected, and so will residents commuting into the capital.
