The local theatre, needs £200,000 in order to make essential building improvements
For over 50 years, The Pump House in Watford has been a vibrant hub for community arts, earning a reputation as the home of the area's best local talent. It has been a cornerstone of Watford’s cultural scene, offering a diverse mix of entertainment, from theatre and music to dance, comedy, visual arts, and more.
Though small in size, The Pump House has a big heart. It’s known for its eclectic programming and dedication to nurturing new talent. The Pump House is committed to making the arts accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background, and plays a vital role in supporting local communities, particularly groups dealing with mental health challenges, learning disabilities, and dementia.
However, the Pump House is in need of some repairs. In 2021, they launched its "Raise the Roof" appeal to raise £750,000 to replace its aging roof and carry out essential upgrades and the venue is now just £200,000 shy of reaching its goal.
To help, a ‘Sponsor A Brick’ scheme has been introduced, allowing supporters to donate £10 and secure a virtual brick, with their names featured on the venue's website as well as on the permanent display in the new building.
Lee Farman, chair of the Pump House Theatre and Arts Trust, said: “We’re massively grateful for all the support people have shown us so far which has got us so close to our ‘Raise the Roof’ target.
“This money will help us transform the Pump House – we’ll be able to make essential repairs as well as put in more modern facilities so that audiences and users can enjoy our community arts venue for many more years to come.”
Improvements to the Pump House will include a new watertight roof, better performance space, more seating, improved disabled access, and a new multi-purpose art studio. These upgrades will ensure the venue’s future and continue its mission to bring the arts to everyone in Watford.
