The Big Sports Day is being staged for the second year in a row as part of the Watford Borough Council’s Big Events series of cultural and sporting activities.
People will have the chance to try out everything from BMXing to cricket, without parting with a single penny during the Big Sports Day on Saturday 19th September. Visitors won’t even need their own bike to have a go on the BMX track – or their own bat to enter one of the cages and hit some balls. And there’s more! Sports and fitness activities will be available all the way along the pedestrianised part of The Parade from 11am to 5.00pm.
There will be golf and tennis areas, where people can test your skills, and a 60m athletics track between Clarendon Road and the flyover. For those looking for something a bit more adventurous, try out parkour. The ‘free-running’ style of leaping and climbing urban obstacles was made famous by a James Bond chase scene in Casino Royale... but Watford’s version won’t include any explosions.
There will be sports activities from Everyone Active, which runs the Watford Central and Watford Woodside leisure centres. Plus town centre gyms NRG and Fitness 4 Less will be running exercise classes throughout the day. Visitors will have the chance to try out the chaotic Zumba dance fitness routine that’s taking the world by storm – or ‘spin’ along to a group exercise bike challenge. Everyone Active will bring a climbing wall too.
Coaches from the mighty Watford FC – recently promoted to the Premier League – and its Community Trust will be based near the Rickmansworth Road subway on The Parade. Loveable club mascot Harry the Hornet will invite everyone that passes by to take part in some footy fun.
Rob Smith, the Trust’s Community Director, said: “Watford Football Club’s Community Sport and Education Trust has the mission statement to make a positive difference for all through sport and learning. Events like the Big Sports Day help us to continue to deliver on that aim, interacting with members of the local community in a fun and enjoyable way.”
Right next-door, there will be some huge inflatables for people to learn some tackling and throwing skills to get into the spirit of the Rugby World Cup.
There will also be a Health and Wellbeing Tent where NHS GP’s will be out again to provide health Mot’s and offer information on being active, eating healthy and living well. A wellbeing tent run by Feel Hot Yoga will provide one-to-one posture clinic, healthy eating and nutrition talks, reiki and yoga training. Feel Hot Yoga may also run a yoga class.
Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “We’re hoping that the Big Sports Day will encourage the whole town to try out a new activity. The Big Sports Day is for all ages and fitness levels: it’s good to exercise, so why not give something a go and see where it takes you? You don’t have to be a Troy Deeney or a Usain Bolt to take part. There will also be three-legged and sack races on our athletics track, but no racing on Segway scooters.”
So make sure the Big Sports Day is in your diary as The Parade will once again be buzzing with a whole host of sporting activities to try out.
