Pupils at St Albans Girls' School have won a Gold engineering award, with some help from Hertfordshire County Council.
Students from St Albans Girls’ School (STAGS) have been awarded a prestigious gold engineering award. This achievement was attained with the help and encouragement of Derek Twigg, Louisa Augustine-Fraser and Christine Quinn from the highways team at Hertfordshire County Council.
The Council Highways staff mentored four Year 12 students – Catriona Cadenhead, Amy Mistry, Naomi Peterson and Farzana Rahman – to help them design and develop an integrated bus stop and multi-modal bus design. The students’ work, which included design testing, construction, cost evaluation and research, was undertaken as part of the Engineering Education Scheme (England and Scotland). The project was also entered for a British Science Association CREST award and the students all received a Gold award.
Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "I think we've found some engineers of the future as the standard of work has been exceptionally high. The students from St Albans Girls' School deserve this gold award and are a credit to their school and families.”
Jackie Curl, teacher at St Albans Girls' School, added: "I'd like to congratulate all the students. This is a well-deserved result of all their hard work over the last six months and they should feel justifiably proud of themselves. I'd also like to thank Derek and Louisa and Christine from Hertfordshire County Council for their support."
According to the Women’s Engineering Society, only seven per cent of professional engineers in the UK are women. The figures are slightly better elsewhere in Europe: 20 per cent in Italy and 26 per cent in Sweden. Look further afield and this figure rises to 40 per cent in China. The council is therefore urging more young women to follow the example of these St Albans students and to go for careers such as engineering which have traditionally been male-dominated.
