Renovation of Watford Junction forecourt to start

Improvement works get underway later this month to enhance the forecourt outside Watford Junction

Plans include new paving and lighting, lots of green planting, seating and visitor signposting along with the beginning of a heritage trail that visitors can follow through the town centre and learn interesting things about Watford’s history as they go.

One of the most noticeable additions will be the large freestanding letters spelling out ‘WATFORD’. These will be a great focal point for the concourse and will encourage visitors’ photos and related social media posts on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, raising the profile of the town in a positive and highly visible way.

Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said:

“8 million people a year travel through Watford Junction station. I am really excited to kickstart these works to bring our station into the 21st century. This will make the station forecourt a more welcoming and interesting place and will be a much better first impression for people coming to our town.”

In order to facilitate the improvements, bike parking is being moved from the forecourt to a secure bike parking facility just seconds away in a lane just off the car park entry road. This custom built facility provides 300 individual, under cover, cycle racks along with cycle repair tools and a compressed air device that anyone can use for free. In advance of works starting on the 29 June, all bikes will need to be removed from the forecourt area the week beginning 22 June when the current racks and stands are being removed.

Improvement works which are being carried out by local contractor Murrills, are expected to be completed in October 2020. This work is being carried out by a partnership comprising: Watford Borough Council, London North Western Railway, Network Rail, the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership.

The project is part of a larger improvement programme to Watford Junction station concourse which is expected to start in Spring 2020.
