Ian Port, Chair of Proud Watford, recently joined Tina Fuller for an interview at Vibe 107.6 FM to discuss how the organisation supports the LGBTQ+ community in Watford.
A Safe Space for Everyone
Proud Watford is committed to fostering an environment where everyone is accepted and welcomed with open arms, regardless of their identity, ability, or disability. The organisation works tirelessly to build a community where self-expression is celebrated and inclusivity is a priority. Their mission is to encourage ongoing efforts towards a society that recognises and values individuality.
The Impact of Proud Watford
During the interview, Ian Port shared his personal experiences and the importance of safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.
"As a gay man, wherever I go, there's still that doubt in my mind that I've inherited from when I was a kid. Thinking, 'Oh, you know, is it the right thing to do? Can I? Am I able? Have I been given permission to be myself—to talk about myself?' But I can overcome that. And that's the point of Proud Watford—to help others, to provide that safe space."
Reflecting on his past, Ian recalled growing up in Watford and attending university at a time when the world was far less inclusive. He acknowledged the progress that has been made and emphasised the collective responsibility to foster inclusivity.
"We all have that duty, that responsibility to each other."
