The New Hope Charity, is hosting its second annual Stadium Sleep Out in an aim to raise funds and awareness for homelessness in the local community.

In partnership with Watford FC Community Sports Education Trust, Hearts Young Homeless in Hemel, and One YMCA; New Hope will host the event on Friday, February 28th.

The event will run from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, with attendees spending the night in Watford’s iconic Vicarage Road Stadium. The event aims to showcase the realities of those who are rough sleeping and hopes participants can gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be homeless.

Upon arrival, attendees will enjoy a variety of activities, including mosaic making, games, and talks from individuals who have directly benefited from New Hope’s services. Guests can also enjoy pie and mash from Vicarage Road eateries before setting up their sleeping arrangements in the stadium.

Rebecca Palmer, New Hope Fundraising and Communications Manager said: “The idea is to let people experience what it’s like to sleep in cold, noisy conditions with bright lights, just as someone experiencing homelessness would.

It really gives people a taste of what it's like even just one night keeping on a hard surface. It's really cold temperatures. We realise how much we appreciate our own beds, our warm homes and just the home comforts that it's so easy to take for granted.”

In the morning, attendees will be sent off with a warm drink and a bacon butty, allowing them to reflect on the experience and the valuable insight gained.

The Stadium Sleep Out is open to families, with children aged 8 and above welcome to participate, provided they are accompanied by an adult. Youth groups are also encouraged to take part

In addition to the Stadium Sleep Out, New Hope is hosting other events throughout the year, including its annual celebration in March, marking 35 years of supporting homeless individuals in Watford.

If you’re unable to attend the sleep-out but still want to help, donations are always welcome. Contributions can be made directly through the event registration page, with all funds being distributed equally among the five charities involved in the initiative.
