'Home for Christmas' is an appeal by New Hope, which was established 1990 to take action after witnessing the large number of homeless persons living near St. Mary's Church in the heart of Watford.

New Hope's mission to support people experiencing homelessness, not only through emergency accommodation but also by helping them reintegrate into society. With the winter season approaching, the charity has its Home for Christmas Appeal

Rebecca Palmer, New Hope Fundraising and Communications Manager said: "New Hope is a Watford-based charity, and we're dependent on our local community. We've received incredible generosity from individuals, businesses, schools, and faith groups over the years, and right now, we need the money to help people all year round – but especially during the winter”

This year's Christmas appeal is called 'Home for Christmas?' which will be match-funded. The appeal itself will run all month, but they will also be at Atria, Watford on the 13th of December where they will be wrapping shoppers presents in exchange for a donation.

The money into the Christmas appeal is going to be for the haven, which is their drop in support centre. Where their team includes a horticulture therapist who provides mental health and well-being services, as well as a tendency maintenance team that works with people who are living in their own homes to ensure no one ends up back on the streets.

When asked what the most important thing that New Hope provides, Palmer said: “...the answer is love. Whenever we work with a person, we see them as an individual. We offer personalised support. Our homes and centres are built according to something called psychologically informed environments. Very much aware of the trauma that people have gone through. And so it's that approach that really helps change lives in terms of what else is needed out there.”

Aside from donating, New Hope also accepts the donation of goods. That could be water bottles, chocolate bars, gloves, socks, and hoodies. They want to provide everyone who comes to the refuge in need of assistance with all they need for the winter.

If you or someone you know is struggling with homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless; please call New Hope’s 24/7 helpline at 0300 012 0168, or go to their centre on 4 Whippendell Road, Watford, which is open from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
