Local Personal Trainer Brings Fitness and Wellness to Dementia Care Homes

James Lewis is making a significant impact in local care homes by introducing chair-based exercises for dementia residents and the elderly.

His mission? To enhance mobility, strength, and cognitive well-being while raising awareness about dementia.

A Personal Connection to Dementia

James’s passion for this work stems from personal experience—he has witnessed first-hand the challenges of dementia through his grandparents, both of whom have battled the condition. His understanding of the disease, from its early stages to its most advanced forms, drives his commitment to helping others.

“I visit a care home where my grandmother currently resides, so not only do I get to help residents stay active, but I also get to see her and encourage her to engage,” James shared in a recent interview on Vibe 107.6 FM with presenter Tina Fuller.

How Exercise Benefits Dementia Residents

Dementia is a progressive condition that affects memory, mood, behaviour, and overall cognitive function. However, James believes that regular movement can make a difference. Chair-based exercises provide a safe, accessible, and effective way for elderly residents to stay active without putting strain on their bodies.

“I’ve received incredible feedback,” James said. “Residents are reporting better mobility, improved circulation, and even reduced aches and pains. Many are now able to move their feet and shoulders more freely, and some find it easier to get out of bed in the morning.”

The Mental Health Benefits

Beyond the physical advantages, James has noticed a positive shift in residents’ mental well-being. The structured fitness sessions have become something they eagerly anticipate each week.

“They look forward to it—it’s amazing. Seeing the smiles on their faces makes it all worthwhile,” he said.

Looking Ahead to 2025

James’s goal for 2025 is to expand his reach and help even more care home residents improve their strength, mobility, and cognitive function. By continuing his work, he hopes to make a lasting difference in the lives of those living with dementia.
