Stilt walkers, a giant bumble bee together with mischievous elves and fairies entertained more than 5,000 people at Larks in the Parks on Sunday 26th June.
Families flocked to five parks in St Albans District to enjoy a ‘Little Bit of Midsummer Magic’, the theme for this year’s family-focused community events.
Depending on the location, families were treated to live music, a performance of Little Red Riding Hood and the opportunity to have a go at craft activities. They also joined in welly-wanging, football sessions, set off water powered rockets, and took part in the annual River Lea duck race. The more musical enjoyed junk tank drumming workshops, while people who preferred a slower pace watched the snail racing.
The locations were:
- Victoria Playing Field, Folly Lane, St Albans;
- London Colney Community Centre, Caledon Road, London Colney;
- Highfield Park Cricket Pavillion, Hill End Lane, St Albans;
- Fleetville Recreation Ground, Hatfield Road;
- Batford Green Space, Marquis Lane, Harpenden.
Parish Councils and voluntary groups worked with St Albans City and District Council and the Arts Team, part of Council leisure contractor 1Life, to organise the activities.
Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism for St Albans City and District Council, said: “Following the previous week’s very busy city centre Alban Weekend event, Larks in the Parks provided another free afternoon of fun and entertainment for all the family. Larks in the Parks bring local communities together at various locations around the District. This year there was a special treat at each of the five events to keep everyone entertained.”
At Highfield Park children met the snappy crocodile, while at Batford they tackled an assault course. There was also Irish dancing at Fleetville and donkey rides at Victoria Playing Field.
