Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill praises works to improve disability access around the town

Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill

Planned High Street improvement works will ensure that our town is more accessible to all residents and visitors.

The works, undertaken by Murrill Construction Ltd. on behalf of Watford Borough Council and Herts County Council, will last until September this year. The improvements will mean a much better experience for everyone, with new walkways and a pedestrianised high street with the exception of buses to accompany the multi-million pound new intu extension.

The changes will involve providing new and increased disabled parking spaces on Church Street, as well as existing disabled parking in town centre car parks. The changes will also give taxis a permanent rank in The Wellstones.

Additionally, the new blue badge bays will operate for a longer period than the previous bays, which will provide disabled residents with more flexibility when they shop.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill, said: “We will always make sure that our High Street is accessible to all residents and visitors regardless of disability. These planned works will create a much better experience for everyone. The High Street will be more pedestrian friendly and will be largely car free, making it better for the environment.

“I know that some residents will have a bit of disruption because of the works, but I promise them that it will be worth it once they can see the end result.”

"Reducing the number of vehicles, widening the pavements, and clearing the streets of clutter which can present serious obstacles to those with disabilities as well as those with age-related mobility issues and people with pushchairs means the High Street will, overall, be far more accessible to everyone than it is now."
